Hog Hoops in Trouble
It was another ugly weekend for Arkansas basketball. Both first year coaches are coming to realize some old habits die hard. Tom Collen is dealing with catastrophic injuries much the way Susie Gardner did. But the bigger problem is that the Ladybacks simply don't have the horses to run with major SEC schools. The last 2 seasons Arkansas started great in the nonconference, only to drop off badly when league play rolled around. Collen needs to recruit some major athletes to have a chance. It's been done before, and could happen again. But a lot work left for the Ladies.
For John Pelphrey, his luxury of 6 seniors has become a bit of a curse. This year's group is struggling with the same problems as last year. A lot of solid individual players, but when they aren't playing together, they fall into bad habits and mental breakdowns. A 2-0 start in the SEC was promising, then a relapse and losses to 2 average clubs. I believe if they lose the LSU game, hopes of an NCAA Tournament are gone. The Tigers are the worst team in the league. Period. If Arkansas goes to Baton Rouge, and plays to LSU's level, there's a chance they will lose. The question is, "Are the veterans going to make the decision to step up their game?". If not, fans will be buying tickets to the NIT.
I like what both coaches are trying to do, and the future looks good. But I think it may be too late to salvage this year's results, which look eerily like their predecessors.
