Super Bowl thoughts

In the NFL's age of parity and rampant free agency, I don't know if anything is much of an upset anymore. But there's no other way to describe the Giants miraculous defeat of the mighty Patriots in Super Bowl 42. I won't go so far to say it was the most exciting, because it wasn't. The last 10 minutes were rather enjoyable, but unless you're a defensive lineman, the game as a whole was just average. The real lynchpin was the storyline. New England's historic season appeared to be pre-ordered by NFL films. Sitting at 18-0 and with the Giants a double digit underdog, few thought this was going to be close (except for Plaxico Burress!). The '72 Dolphins were probably crying into their champagne glasses knowing tha New York was just another speed bump on the Pats road to glory. But they, like most of us, were grossly mistaken. The way to stop Tom Brady is the way you stop any good QB, apply massive pressure. The G-men's formidable d-line assaulted Brady's chin all night. If it wasn't sacks, it was hurries, knockdowns and pressures. The Pats had no solid run game to rely on, and isn't it fitting that came back to bite them at the end. You know what they say about eggs in one basket? Don't do it.
I will say this for the Patriots. The '72 Dolphins can stop their gloating and drolling on and on about how they were the only perfect season. First off, The Pats actually won 18 straight, already besting your mark. Sure, they lost the Super Bowl, but in this day and age, going 18-0 against these NFL teams is a lot harder (and let's not forget the media scrutiny and constant pressure). Ask any baseball player if it's astronomically harder to have a lengthy hit streak nowadays as opposed to Dimaggio's days. You know the answer. So enjoy the win Giants; and to the Patriots I say: "That's what you get cheaters!."
