Today's High School QB: Knowledge is Power
I spent most of my afternoon in Greenwood to observe a quarterback camp being held at Greenwood High School. For anyone familiar with high school football in this area the past few years, Greenwood football is synonymous with good quarterbacks.
What I think people don't often realize with today's high school game is the complexity of the schemes they run. Which generally adds more responsibilities to one position: the quarterback.
Seriously, take a moment to stop and imagine 21 bodies moving all around you. And all the different ways they could be moving, where they're moving, and most importantly emphasized in this weekend camp; WHY they're moving.
And in a split second, this teenage kid under center has to recognize the coverage, know immediately how to react and where to put the ball. Having the athletic ability to put the ball there is the easy part in comparison.
This camp was all about helping youth quarterbacks understand than just the basic mechanics of being a fundamentally sound QB. It's about trying to help them understand WHY they're doing the things they do on the field and how to handle them most efficiently.
As much information as an aspiring quarterback in today's game needs to retain, it wasn't any accident there were a lot of pre-teen kids in attendance. You can't start early enough when playing something this competitive.
