Taking One for the Team
They really didn't have anything to prove on Tuesday. At a time where scouts & analysts are looking to knit-pick any potential "flaw" in their abilities, one could go as far as to say that participating would only hurt their draft stock.
But Darren McFadden and Felix Jones took part anyway in Tuesday's pro day at Arkansas. Which at first glance, Mark & I didn't understand why they were doing this. Then it became clear.
By having two likely 1st round picks present, it drew enough interest of scouts and coaches from virtually every NFL team to make an appearance. Thus, all the other Razorback prospect had one last opportunity to show off why they need to be picked up in the draft.
I have to admit, that does say a lot about the character of D-Mac and Felix. They didn't have to do that. In their personal interests, it was not a safe move.
Fortunately it all appeared to work out for the dynamic duo and even for some of the other guys still hoping to catch on; particularly ones like Marcus Monk. Players that undoubtedly have some of the physical tools to make it pro, but for one reason or another maybe are lacking in certain areas. In Monk's case, the knee injury.
And I do hope we see guys like Monk or Weston Dacus hear their name called on draft day because it just goes to show how personal sacrifice can really help the greater good of the team both on and off the field.
