Dmac: Under the Microscope
I wonder what it must be like for college athletes at the combine. Getting poked, prodded, examined, quizzed, studied and dissected by NFL scouts. Sitting right there in the middle of it all is Darren McFadden. No one questions the fact he will be a top 10 pick. The real conundrum is when he will be selected.
Some draft experts say he's the best athlete in the draft, bar-none. While true, others are questioning his ability to be a gamebreaker at the next level. One NFL Network went so far to say Dmac's "legs are dead on contact". Sure thing pal, ask LSU if his legs are dead on contact. But the trouble for McFadden is the trouble he's found off the field.
In light of Michael Vick and Pac Man Jones, NFL teams are becoming very leary of players who have a knack for finding trouble. McFadden has been involved in two nightclub incidents (seriously injuring a toe in one), has paternity suits pending (he told Yahoo that he has two kids arriving this summer). And that's not even mentioning the Escalade controversy he brought about the week of the Cotton Bowl.
Is any of it serious? I don't know, it probably depends on how desperate a team is to grab his talents. Some NFL clubs have been snakebit before, and are less likely to gamble on a guy who might find himself in hot water. Dmac will be drafted quickly, but it will be interesting to see if his off-the-field issues counter his incredible ability on the field. The draft is in April.
