The Bonds Indictment: I hope it's worth it.

So after 4 years of tireless investigating, expert speculation, and a best-selling book, federal prosecutors finally indict Barry Bonds for perjury and obstruction of justice. Or in other words, "We know you lied to the grand jury and now we think we can prove it."

What's bizarre about all this is that nothing has changed in terms of new evidence in this case. His trainer is still wasting away in prison for keeping his mouth shut. The latest drug raids have turned up nothing relating to his involvement with BALCO, steroids, etc. So... why now?

This is beginning to remind me of the Duke lacrosse players and their rape case. It was obvious prosecutor Mike Nifong didn't have enough evidence to convict not to mention he already went out of his way to publicly assure the community these young men would be brought to justice. (And I'm sure that had nothing to do with his upcoming election...)

My point is, because federal investigators have invested so much time and money in hopes of convicting Barry Bonds, it seems anything less than an indictment of Bonds would be a tough pill to swallow. If the prosecution has had enough evidence to put up a decent case against him, why wait FOUR YEARS??

Either these past four years have been spent putting together an "air-tight" case against Bonds or merely scraping up enough evidence to justify an indictment. We'll see which one it is soon enough.
