The eternal homerun countdown
Ok, it's just getting painful. Sitting around for Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez to hit their milestone homeruns is getting old. First, A-Rod hitting 500 is worth mentioning, but cutting in live for every at-bat? That seems a little much. Maybe it's just slow in the sports world right now until football really gets cranked up.
As for Bonds, I just can't get into it. The tarnish of steroids and scandal, and the fact he is creeping towards Hank Aaron at a snail's pace. The swirling rumors about cheating, whether or not Selig will be there, the silence from Aaron himself towards the record. Bonds is also not media nor fan-friendly which makes it even worse.
It really brings up the wonderful memory of McGwire and Sosa, and their magical homerun race. The nation loved it, the fans were ecstatic, the media lived off it every single day. You name it, from the commisioner on down to the batboys, we all turned a blind eye to steroids and savored the moments as they unfolded.
In this day and age, we simply can't enjoy things like that. Knowing now what we refused to acknowledge back then only puts a damper on this Homerun King. I think i'd rather be blissfully unaware than stuck in the knowing malaise most of us experience with Barry Bonds. And perhaps down the road, with A-Rod as well.
