Hogs vs. Vanderbilt, Game 1. WOW
In my business of covering sports for a living, there isn't much I haven't seen. From Super Bowls to the Masters to the Daytona 500. I tell people all the time that usually it's a job, and nothing more. But occasionally it's a blast. A good example is Friday night at Baum Stadium: over 9,000 crammed into the stadium to watch a couple of top 10 teams slug it out.
The pitching duel between Nick Schmidt and David Price never really happened (both struggled early, and it was tied at 5 heading into the late innings), but that's ok, because a heck of a game broke out, with Arkansas jumping up 7-5, only to see the Commodores come back in the top half of the 8th to tie it up. So we head to the bottom of the 9th, bases loaded and 2 outs for Jake Dugger. The count goes to 3 balls, no strikes. And in amazing fashion, 3 straight strikes to bail out Vandy and you had to wonder if the Hogs would recover (they stranded a dozen runners Friday night). And what could only be described as the essence of college baseball, Logan Forsythe bombed one to the wall in the bottom of the 10th. It was caught, but with the outfielder backtracking, it gave Sean Jones a good start tagging up from 2nd. He turned on the jets, the relay came to the plate and: The catcher bobbles it, Jones scores the winning run, pandemoniun ensues... and my enthusiasm returns. Sure, most days my job is a grind: but some nights it reminds me why I keep trudging along- I cover sports for a living, and it doesn't get any better.
