6th grader weighs in....

Written by Connor Brock... 6th grader at Kirksey Middle School:

The Razorback Story
The University of Arkansas has been a very important part to our state. Recently the Athletic program has been letting us down. About over half of the people in the state of Arkansas are not happy with it! We need new leadership for the football team! Houston Nutt has not been doing his part the last few years! I am very displeased with the program right now! We need new leadership, and we need it soon!
Around the first week in January, the committee to Save the Hogs put an ad in the paper with the title "Its Time For a Change!" This ad was telling, not persuading, but telling Houston Nutt and Frank Broyles to leave the U of A. This stirred a lot of people to say and do things in the coming weeks.
This past season Arkansas went 10-4. They haven’t had a season this good in a while. They got Gus Malzahn, Mitch Mustain, Damian Williams, and Ben Cleveland. All these guys were from Springdale High School, and were a big part in the Arkansas offense early in the year. When the hogs beat Alabama and Auburn the offense we saw early in the year faded away. And when Mitch threw that interception the first drive in the South Carolina game, it disappeared once and for all.
The hogs made it to the Capital One Bowl but got beat 17-14 by Wisconsin. Mitch and Casey Dick (the other QB) switched on and off during the whole game. Before the game Damian Williams transferred to USC. I think that was a very bad mistake on his part. Chuck Barrett told me that Damian will not get to play much, and I totally agree!
Once that happened everything went down hill for the hogs. Gus left to go to Tulsa in early January, and Mitch asked for his release papers soon after. However, Mitch is still enrolled in the U of A, but will not be playing football in the spring.
This is what made the "Its Time For a Change!" ad to make the paper. People like Wally Hall and Grant Hall have been writing things in the paper about this. I had talked to Grant the other day. He said he had been working eleven straight hours on something.
From the time "Its Time For a Change!" made the paper to now, many key things have happened. People call into a sports talk show (Press Row) every morning complaining about Houston and Frank. If you go to savethehogs.com you will find pages of things that the committee thinks is wrong with the hogs. A few things that made Gus and Mitch leave were; "Nutt didn’t give Gus free range or control over the offense" Houston has lied to the fans and Frank had lied to the fans. Frank said during a meeting that "Gus called 100% of the plays". If anyone watched half a game the hogs played, and knew how Gus worked you would know that he did not call 100% of the plays.
In the "Its Time For a Change!" ad, it also said that "The Athletic program has cast a pall over this once proud institution". It goes on to say that Frank has done good to the program but recently has done bad. It then says, "Please do not overstay your effectiveness". Then later in the article it goes on to say that the 2006 season was good, but "We are disappointed and embarrassed by the lack of control". This is very true. The 2006 season seemed like no one was in control. You never could tell that one person was running the offense for one whole game. You never could tell who was even running the athletic program. You couldn’t even tell if ANYONE was running it.
The article goes on to say that Houston has not appeared in a BCS bowl game while he has been here. Then the last sentence says, "We urge both these men to step down immediately!"
So the sports talkers talked, and the sports writers wrote. For the next month everyone just talked about the subject. The only action anyone took was a protest outside the Athletic department. And that didn’t even solve anything!
This past Thursday, I got an email from Grant Hall. He said that Frank Broyles was going to resign from the AD position at the U of A. And sure enough Saturday, February 17, 2007 Frank Broyles announced his retirement at age 82. His last day will be December 31, 2007.
Houston Nutt and Frank Broyles have been with the Arkansas program for a while. This year is Franks 50th year with the U of A, and Nutt’s 9th. Houston HAS NOT WON A BOWL GAME since he has been the coach at Arkansas. Arkansas has only won one national championship and it was over ten years before Frank became AD. Frank HAS made good contributions to the university, but in the past 8 to 9 years, Arkansas has gotten nowhere. Most of this I don’t think is Franks fault. It is Nutt’s. The only thing Frank could have done was fired Houston. Frank is the one responsible for the growth, the new stadium, plus other things. Frank should not be the one leaving Arkansas or the one to blame, Houston should! Frank has done a lot more good things for Arkansas than Nutt. Houston has lied to the media, the players, and the fans! He told three separate lies! I have sources that say he told Mitch, "This is your team. You can do what ever you want with it." And did he let Mitch do what he wanted with it? NO! He didn’t! Frank might have lied to the fans a few times, but the fans might have over reacted on that one a little.
From all the facts I’ve given you, I hope you agree with me, Houston is the one to blame! Some people may say that if Nutt leaves then the Arkansas program will not be the same for some time. Well I doubt that. Nutt may have been here a long time, but that doesn’t mean someone else can’t come in and fill in where he left off. I agree with the article! I agree with the fans! I agree that the Arkansas program needs a change! And I hope other people agree when I say, Nutt needs
to do us all a favor and GET OUT NOW!!!
What I think…

The University of Arkansas has been a very important part to our state. Recently the Athletic program has been letting us down. Me and about the rest of Arkansas are not happy with it! We need new leadership for the football team! Houston Nutt has not been doing his part the last few years! I am very displeased with the program right now! We need new leadership, and we need it soon!
